CARRIAGE INCIDENT AT WHICKHAM - TWO WOMEN KILLED
Evening Chronicle 24th August 1882

Last night a carriage accident occurred at Whickham, which resulted in the death of two women. It appears that Mrs. Jane Pearson, Mrs. Elizabeth Wearmouth and Mary Ann Hall, mother, aunt and sister respectively of Mr.T Pearson, tailor and draiper, Gateshead, drove round in Mr Pearson's pony.phaeton, by Norwood and Byding Burn, at the latter of which they paid a visit to a friend, and then drove on to Whickham. Just as they entered the west end of the village of Whickham, the pony took fright and ran off at full speed. Mrs. Hall, who was driving, found herself unableto regain command of the animal, and an attempt made by Mr. Davidson of the Clavering Arms, Gateshead, to stop it was futile.

After the pony had proceeded about a hundred and fifty yards the carriage carne in violent collision with the wall of the garden in front of the house situated next to the Three Tuns Inn, throwing the inmates out with considerable violence destroying the phaeton, and knocking down a strong stonepillar and part of the wall, some of the stones of which weigh more than a hundredweight. Mrs pearson, whose face was much disfigured, as killed instantly, and Mrs Wearmouth received such injuries as resulted in her death shortly before Ten O'clock.

Mrs. Hall happily sustained no more serious injuries than a severe shock, which for a time deprived her of conciousness. She and her unfortunate companions were carried into the Three Tuns Inn by PC Wilkinson, PC Lambert and Corporal Turnbull, instructor of the 1st Newcastle Volunteer Engineers. The assistance of Dr. Attwater, who lives in the village, was speedily obtained. Though he was unable to save Mrs. Wearmouth he was able to assist Mrs. Hall, who shortly after being carried into the inn recovered so far as to bear removal to the house of Mr. Lambert '(a friend of hers) at Fellside. Later her friends removed her to Gateshead. The bodies of the two deceased ladies remain at the Three Tuns Inn awaiting and inquest.

Nb. Both Elizabeth Wearmouth, aged 75, and Jane Pearson, aged 73, were both burried at Lamesley Church on Monday 28th August 1882.
